What do you study during the Novitiate?
Courses are oriented to the spiritual needs of this stage of formation: Sacred Scripture, in particular the Psalms; Liturgy, especially the Liturgy of the Hours, with practical instruction in singing and public reading; the Rule of St. Benedict; monastic history and spirituality, especially the Cistercian Patrimony; instruction in prayer and lectio and on the vows and the meaning of religious life; an introduction to the Christian Mystery and Christian Doctrine, and to the Constitutions and Statutes of the Order.

Hello, I've been considering becoming a Trappist monk for quite a while and was wondering, if someone wishes to become a monk and a priest, do they have to be ordained as a priest before they join the monastery? Thanks.
If a candidate is called to be a monk and a priest it is not necessary to be ordained before joining the monastery, although that is possible, too. Discernment of a call to priesthood within a monastery for one who is not yet ordained is worked out with the abbot and the monk, in consultation with the community.

Dear brothers, I wish to thank you for being the "lungs" of the Church. May God bless your community with men wholly dedicated to the contemplative life, and may the peace of Christ be with you now and forever. Pray for me!

I have recently been reading through the diary of Fr. Raphael posted on the trappists.org website, and have been greatly encouraged and strengthened in my walk with Christ because of it. I want to thank you, brothers, for your commitment and dedication to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to let you know that your dedication has impacted my life and helped me grow recently.
in Christ,
Robert

Why no longer Our Lady of New Melleray Abbey?
The official title is "Our Lady of New Melleray." All our Cistercian communities are dedicated to Our Lady, and the individual monks and nuns take the name of Mary as part of their own when they become novices.

I first heard of your abbey on National Catholic Register and love the Stations of the Cross. How does one become a lay member of the order? Also, I would like you to pray for me that I will be a priest for souls in my vocation to the Priesthood Christ has called me to and also to suffer in union with Christ's Suffering with this complicated illness I have for two years now. May God bless you all at the Monastery for building those beautiful caskets.
Although membership in the AIC is not restricted, limitations of space and monastic resources may make it necessary to restrict the size of the community in the future. The annual Visitor Orientation Day is held in September of each year. To place yourself on the list of prospective visitors, please write to the Membership Coordinator: gravesjakeruth@qwest.net

I rcently made a self dircted retreat at New Mellerey. The lst time I was there was when I was a Crosier Brother Novice. Although I didnt remain a religious I have over the year come back to the church and wanted to come and spend time in a quiet atmosphere with an occasional laugh heard. How wonderful. I enjoyed my time in prayer and was so happy to see that the Chapel gates were opened for Mass, communion and nightly blessing. Felt so included. I thank you for bringing me closer to God once again. Sincerely, Bob Pequignot
