Hello. Do you have a "gift shop" where you sell items other then caskets? A friend told me you have some carved wooden items and Monestary carmals. If so, what are the hours and location. Thank you!
Yes, we have a beautiful Gift Shop in the Guest House.

Are there hiking trails available for retreatants, or are guests pretty much confined to the immediate monastery grounds?
There are some trails through the farm fields for long hikes, a couple miles one way.

Brothers,
Do you have any plans of possibly developing a Columbarium similar to the one at Mepkin Abbey? It would be what seems a perfect fit for New Melleray...just wondering. Thank you.
We don't have any plans for a Columbarium yet. Perhaps some day.

Is there an age limit for a person who would want to become a monk and join your community? Also, what exactly is an oblate and how would one go about becoming one?
Yes, we have an upper age limit of 45. An oblate is a member of the community who does not make vows. Those who would like to be oblates instead of professed monks go through the same discernment process and formation as other members of the community. One may contact the vocation director for more information.

Good Brothers: May God grant you peace!
I am a first order friar of the Order of St. Francis, an Anglican Franciscan Order. Please know that praying and singing Compline along with you online is a beautiful experience. Since we are an Apostolic, dispersed order, I am separated from my fellow brothers. Having the opportunity to pray the Office in community, even if is done by computer, is cherished by me.

Peace and Good,

In Feb. and later in the the spring of 1988, I visited New Melleray Abby and spent time with Brother Gus. I do not know his full name, he did suffer from a weak heart, and has probably past away. I could not tell from the listings of brothers. Could you send me his full name and any information. He was such a loving kind person and I have never forgotten him. He used to send me pressed leaves/flowers as a card as he loved nature so! I have a desire to return to New
Melleray some time in the future and thinking of my memories today, I looked you up on the internet.

Br. Augustine's last name is Nave. He died at the age of 92 on September 13, 2004.

Good Blessing to all. I have visited the Monastic Center during a personal retreat years ago and I would like to know how Father Kenneth Tietijen is doing these days. I was introduced to New Melleray by Father Ken and a lot has happened to my life since and I continuously pray for you all.

Fr. Ken is doing fine. He is now 85 years old and continues to celebrate all the hours of the Liturgy in Church with his fellow monks.

Would you please share how to discern whether a life change is from God or from other means? Thank you. Christ's peace to all of New Melleray.
One good way to discern whether a life change is from God or not is to seek counsel from a spiritual director.

Participated today in the burial of my second cousin Fr, Thaddeus Kennedy. Fr. Mark's eulogy was very moving, my cousin was a very quite man, but his love of the Monks and New Mellary was very profound. Rest in Peace Thad.
